Purse Quirks: Are they for the Faint of Heart?

I am very particular about purses and bags. My friends are always poking fun at my purse quirks, but I stick to them. These are my requirements:

1) The straps must be long enough to put over my shoulder and not rub my arm. I do not use messenger bag style single handle bags because they tend to rub against my clothing or my skin as I walk.  This puts me in a crabby mood and a bag should not do that; I prefer tote and backpack style bags.

2) The bag needs to have “feet” on the bottom and/or be made of a material I can take a Clorox wipe to should I set it on the floor at a  restaurant or in the cart at Target. The first spot I usually put my purse when I get home is our kitchen island  (hence, where I prepare food) and although I do clean off my kitchen surfaces, just thinking about the “what if” makes me a little ill.

3) It must have a zip closure. Because I hold my bags over my shoulder and frequently bend down to help my kids put on shoes, etc. I can not have things dumping out of my purse every time I move. This has happened to me and my cell phone came tumbling out over my shoulder and knocked me in the nose. Not fun. Funny…but no fun.

4) Inside the bag, I need compartments – several of them. One for my phone, another for my keys, a third for my point and shoot camera (I need to have a camera with me that I can compose an image with better than my phone will allow.) and a small slot for my Eos Sphere lip balm. The main compartment must be big enough for my wallet and a quick snack, like an apple. Everything else is just bonus at this point, but if any of these compartments zipped closed, that would make it even closer to perfection.

5) With all of these compartment requirements, you would think this bag would be huge, but to be more particular, I do not want luggage-sized bags for everyday use. I prefer them to fit between the space under my arm down to my hip and no larger. In fact, the shorter the better. I celebrated leaving the annoying baby bag stage by purchasing a small silver bag from Charming Charlie’s that did not zip closed, barely fit my wallet and I ended up in the situation mentioned in #3. I loved that purse, still do, but for everyday use I learned that lesson the hard way.

6) Durability is of course a requirement. I am so tired of purses that break a shoulder strap or the zipper rips. It also urkes me when the material or leather starts to tear up or come unstitched when I have used it for one season.  I don’t like buying five purses a year because they can’t hold up. I would rather buy five a year because they all meet my requirements and are still cute! Seriously, who wouldn’t?

7) I also need a little funky designed into my purse. Texture, shape or bling – something that says, “I’m a creative person who wants a funky purse.”  I really only switch bags with the change from cold to warm weather (or if I need to switch to a formal bag for an event or wedding), so I need something low maintenance and it has to go with the majority of my wardrobe.

8) I refuse to spend $350+ on a purse. That’s a car payment or a school loan payment. That’s a food budget at my house, not a purse. (Sorry Michael Kors, I do love you.)

Is that too much to ask from a purse or bag designer? Apparently, my friends think I have set my standards too high. I am not caving on these requirements!

I wanted to get a separate bag this year for the gym or for going out for a day adventure with my family. It needed to be a  bag that would meet the majority of my requirements, be casual and sporty, hold a water bottle and have some extra space for my kids and hubby to toss in a few things for the day.  I am so happy that Scrubs & Beyond is carrying the Smitten Faint of Heart quilted tote bag because it actually meets my requirements AND my desire for a gym/adventure bag! YES! (Insert happy dance…)

This black tote bag is textured with a quilted, diamond patterned, embroidered HOT pink heart detail and silver sparkly Smitten wings. YES! I am over the moon with its zip closure, plus on the front is a compartment for my water bottle! There are two internal hot pink durable mesh pockets, a small zip closure pocket and three other little gadget pockets for all of my little stuff. The bag fits between my under arm and my hip (just makes it) AND the handles seem to be durable, non-rubbing and even have hot pink stitching details. It is 100% nylon which means I can disinfect it. Plus, the price! AWESOME. I am seriously smiling from ear to ear. I am crossing my fingers it holds up!

If you are as smitten (Yes, I made that pun.) over this Smitten Faint of Heart bag as I am, please leave me a comment on this blog post about Purse Quirks. ONE of you eligible commentors will be randomly chosen on February 13, 2014 (around 10:00 CST*) to win this bag! I have to buy mine, but I am happy to give one away!  So tell me, what are your bag requirements or purse quirks? If you have none, just make a comment about which one of mine you like best.

Working in a operating room setting your purse on the floor is a big NO unless you can wipe it off so that would be a great purse for me

As long as it has compartments and zips or has a closer on top.

I have very similar requirements. Long strap(s), big enough to carry a bunch of stuff, compartments, and zipper closure. It must be easy to clean, and a color that will not show every little spec of dust or dog fur. I really love this bag! I hope I have a chance to win it! :)

I love love love purses. But I too am a cheapstake. Not paying a fortune for a designer bag. One quirk for me is that I hate bags with a bunch of sections. I always seem to reach in the wrong section as I look for something.

Your purse quirks are very similar to mine! The bag has to be just right...the straps need to be just long enough and there has to be plenty of pockets so I can store EVERYTHING in it! Just starting out as a nurse on a busy med/surg floor I need to bring a ton of stuff with me; binder, clipboard, pens and enough food to last 12 hours lol! Plus the bag has to look cute and this one is definitely a winner!!!

The straps must be long enough to put over my shoulder and have a lot of other places to put things so that it stays organized, also have to be able to see easily inside the bag. I am in nursing school right now, so this would be prefect for all my stuff I need for class and clinicals.

I was to excited and just left a quick comment before reading. I would have to say my biggest issue with bags are the strap length and durability! I love the fact it's cleanable and that there is a spot for a water bottle because I always have one on me at all times.

I have grown to love purses and bags over the past 10 years and the styles I own vary as much as my patients do at work every day! What I look for in a purse is "most bang for my buck!" Texture, compartments, fun, expressionalism I LOVE this bag from Scrubs & Beyond for the whole package it is.

All of your requirements and then some!! It's bad that you have to change purses from work to home to school. That's what I have to do now, so this could do the trick for two of those!!! And it's my style too which is hard to find!!!

My purse quirk is the bag MUST have a couple inside pockets! I like putting the most important things in the inside pockets so I'm not searching the bottom of the bag to find things, like my name badge/swipe card.

My purse has to have pockets, no big cavernous hole that everything gets lost in. Big plus if it has multiple pockets on the outside for my phone, camera or other small gadget I want to get to quickly. Oh and some sort of a ring somewhere that I can clip my D-ring key chain onto.

I love bags - I think it is an addiction of mine. As I get older (and now mom of a 1 yr old) I find my list of requirements getting larger. I used to like small purses that just held wallet, lip balm and keys. But now - oh no. The bag has to have a substantial size without getting too big - must have room for a bottle of water, kindle, keys, wallet, make up, lotion, hand sanetizer, work badges, a snack, and sometimes if I feel lazy and don't want to bring the diaper bag - a few necessities for little one. I prefer same style bag as you - over the shoulder, no loooong strap. And it has to be durable - I hate to fall in love with a bag just to have it fall apart a couple months later. I'd rather pay a little extra for quality (not for the brand) than to buy new bags every couple of months. The smitten heart bag is so cute - if I don't win I might just have to buy it!

I love bags and am a big fan of tote or messenger styles. I hate a "pit"- a big purse with only one section inside- everything drops to bottom and my hand gets lost for what seems like hours trying to find something! So compartments are a fav for me!! Also don't want to spend a fortune!

As a hospice nurse, I have to keep paperwork and care supplies with me at all times. I also keep a few personal items in my bag too. Right now Im using a cheap diaper bag. Its okay, but not much of a fashion statement. Since Im in and out of homes and facilities, I leave my bag in the trunk. I use a smaller bag for my lunch, keys, etc that I take in and out of home. Never and I mean never do I put it anywhere but the floor. I wipe off everything I can every so often and use a disinfectant spray for everything else.

I'm an ER PA who commutes for days at a time I hate (HATE) switching bags between work and home so I need one big enough to act as a carry-on tote for all the extras I haul to work yet small enough that it's not too bulky for around town. I'm on the short side, so it can't be too long. Love some sort of a closure on top, especially a zipper. I always have high organizational hopes when I see interior compartments, but I rarely use them. Hate to spend money so always go for cheap - but I still want it cute and stylish.

I work in dialysis, our bags never go inside the unit. Straight to our locker. Lots of room and compartments for change of uniform, stethoscope and everyday essentials. Long enough shoulder straps to hold under your arm and comfort. I'm guilty on expensive purse buying, one of a kind and I had to have it several overtimes later.

This bag is great! I have to travel between 4 offices and carry everything for my Dr. With me. I like how it can be wiped down, all of the compartments, the space for your water bottle and just LOVE the colors! It would match most of my scrubs. This bag would be perfect for my job!

I would love a purse with sections. It never fails that my kids shove something in my purse. Never mind the fact that I tell them if they take it with them it is no my responsibility. It always manages to end up there. I hate having to dig through everything looking for what I want. I don't like cloth purses for the fact that you can't wipe them down, for hygiene and just to make them look nice. It doesn't have to be leather, just able to handle a wipe down if needed. This purse is adorable.

    1) Durable- because finding a new purse and transferring everything is a process. 2) A clip inside the top of the purse to attach keys to so there is no digging in the bottom. 3) Metal tabs/legs to keep the bottom of the purse off the floor. 4) Pockets inside to separate everything neatly.

Yes. My purse quirks include : 1-Durability by fashion. I need my bag to stand up to kids, candy wrappers and random acts of womanhood. 2-I prefer a tote in a color that is neutral, yet stylish (camel brown, chocolate brown, black or deep greens). 3-I need to be able to sling it over my shoulder and know everything is there. With a zipper closure, not just snaps. Two straps. Yes. 4-I need pockets for pens, lip balm (EOS or MAC), keys, gum and phone. My purse is an extension of my accessibility to the world, and how well I can rock a red lip. 5-I love a bag I can keep up with me, and what I do...seamlessly. 6-My price limit for a bag is less than $200. I do.love a great bag, and one day I hope to.own some Balenciaga, a Louis, and a MK. But for right now, Nine West is a splurge (a motherhood and nursing students).

I'm a bit of a tomboy and don't really like to use a purse so I always have a bag (right now it's a messenger bag) and I tend to carry a notebook or book or something with me (i'm in school to get my LPN) and it makes the bag heavy which this makes the straps dig into my shoulder. I also work in a nursing home as a CNA so need something that is easy to wipe clean and disinfected. This bag sounds like it would be a great fit for me.

It's has to zip, as said in the blog, I do a lot of bending & too many times I've had to recover things from the floor. It also has to be big enough to fit my stuff as well as some baby items but have compartments because I don't like facing to rummage for an hour to find my wallet. Being a busy nurse & mother of 3 it still amazing me the mess that can accumulate on the outside & inside of the bag, easy to clean is a must!

I agree with all of your "must" on a purse/bag. However, I use my for school as well so having a roomy bag, long straps, lots of pockets, wide base, easy to wipe, and a nice color with an attractive design is key. I am a sucker for bags so, if I don't win this bag I will have to buy it! Cute!

I often carry multiple bags to and from work, and it is frustrating especially during clinical time with my students. I'm not a big fan of huge purses overfilled with stuff, as this is what usually ruins the bag. For everyday, I like a smallish handbag to carry my wallet, keys, phone, etc. but for Clinical, when I'm carrying student assignments, reference material, food and pain meds for that student with the never ending questions or uncooperative staff member, I need a tote like this... It has space for that stuff and room to hold the phone, iPad, chargers, wallet, etc of everyday! Great option...so cute and it's unique design will make it easy to find in a jumbled break room or locker room.

I've got a lot of the same requirements. I don't require mine to zip close on top, but I do require a closure (Toggles are a favorite). Mine also has to have an inside zip pocket to keep a few things and durability is a must! Mine has to be big enough to fit my iPad (I have the full size one) along with everything else. I like to have extra room so I can throw work stuff/snacks in when I'm out of the office without taking an extra bag, but that is one thing I'm willing to compromise. I've learned to watch some of the expensive ones (like Coach, etc.) for outlet sales and I will splurge ($100 range) or ask for it for a present about yearly give or take and have found the durability I requrie that way, otherwise I go thru them way too fast (and I have some that are about 5 years old now). I am also a huge fan of Vera Bradley bags because they are machine wash which is great for the germaphobe like me.

My purse has to have a separate compartment inside for feminine products, a compartment for tissues, another compartment for trash, Must be easily wiped off with disinfectant wipes as I hate emptying it to throw in washer. I also want to comment that I used to work in a factory and you NEVER put your bag on the floor there unless you wanted a 10 lb rat rifling through its contents XP

I must have a purse with lots of compartments because I carry lots of stuff in my purse! I also have a 2 year old whom I do not use a diaper bag with anymore because it's too hard to handle a two year old and tote two bags so I need something that's durable and can hold diapers and the baby necessities as well! And by the way pink and black are my favorite colors:)

I too need a lot of compartments to hold my things as I carry a lot around in my purse, but don't want anything too large because of my back problems. I am also very frugal & feel that it's ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars on a bag. I love the design of this bag & all it has to offer.
